MAALINI

This painting shows the scene of Keechaka's harassing Maalini, the guised Droupadi, serving Viraata's consort Sudeshna.

Keechaka was Sudeshna's brother and army general of Viraata too. Sudeshna sent Keechaka's residence on the errand of bringing some wine for her, of course, unwillingly, yielding to his coersions and threats of dire consequences in the event of not obliging him. Then, he forced her for sensual pleasures. Maalini, somehow escaped him and ran Viraata's court for protection. Even in the king's full court, Keechaka dragged her on the floor and kicked claiming his impunity. The helpless Viraata remained deaf to her cries. The frightened courtiers bore the insult. When she derided the weak king and her silent husbands, Yudhishthira sent her away fearing leakage of secret and covertly warned even Bheema not to react then and there.

Maalini later met Bheema secretly and devised a plan to entice Keechaka to a lonely dancing hall the following night . There, Bheema lay on the bed waiting for him. Soon after Keechaka's arrival, Bheema disclosed himself and killed Keechaka in a severe hand-to-hand fight.
